The Witch’s Window

The Witch’s Window — a private commission for a collector and gallerist in Shanghai.

The commission was inspired by the theme of “miniature world and mysticism”. This led me to delve into ideas of ancient myths, reincarnation, and the way the past returns through objects, creatures, and the natural world.

The illustration takes the form of a cycle, where creatures and antique objects are connected in a continuous exchange. Each creature carries an old object belonging to the next, as if returning it to its origin. At the centre of the cycle sits an old woman in a small cabin — a wise, almost witch-like figure who watches through her window, aware of the ancient forces moving around her.

The piece explores the idea that everything is part of everything else, and that nothing truly exists in isolation.
