Rusalka Toy Theatre

Rusalka — a paper theatre created for Benjamin Pollock’s Toyshop.

For this commission, I was invited to reinterpret the story of Rusalka, the water nymph from Slavic folklore, as a miniature paper theatre. The project brought together illustration, character design and three-dimensional storytelling, allowing the story to unfold through a series of layered scenes and paper figures.

I illustrated the characters, scenery and visual world of the theatre, exploring the contrast between Rusalka’s underwater world and the human world she longs to enter. The final piece was produced as a cut-and-assemble paper theatre, with reversible scenes, paper characters and an illustrated instruction booklet.

You can view the finished theatre Here or read the Interview to learn more about the project.
