The Aluco Sisters

Eulalia Aluco and her sister are inspired by the elusive Strix Aluco, commonly known as the Tawny Owl, a bird that is more often heard than seen.

I was especially drawn to the name itself. Strix comes from the ancient name for a nocturnal owl, a word that became closely associated with striga, a supernatural creature and witch in Roman folklore. The connection between the mysterious owl and the figure of the witch felt like the perfect starting point for these two sisters.

But don’t be mistaken. What appears to be two dolls is actually a single art doll with two faces. And because Eulalia is such an elusive creature, I am not entirely sure which of the two is Eulalia, and which of them prefers not to reveal her name.

This one of a kind art doll is entirely handmade from clay and textiles. She wears an antique christening dress, found tucked away in a corner of an antique market somewhere in France.

Two faces, one doll, and perhaps only one of them is willing to tell you who she really is.
