Theatre of Lunatics
Housed in a painted handmade cardboard and paper box, this lunar diorama features intricate original watercolor and gouache drawing papercuts.
The piece has been made inspired by the ethimology of the word Lunatic, after which an original tale was written by the artist, as it follows:
Lunatic (adj.) late 13c., “Affected with periodic insanity dependent on the changes of the Moon”; from Old French lunatique “insane”, or directly from Late Latin lunaticus “moon-struck”.
Once upon a time, a girl wandered through the woods. She followed the alchemist’s advice: “should you succeed in bringing me a vial with lunar essence, we will bring your beloved back from the dead”.
The promise lingered in the air, weaving through moonlit nights and shadowed days. In her quest, she searched every puddle, every reflection, during each full moon and every moonless night. Carrying glass vials, she roamed the edges of the forest, hoping that one day, among the mist and moss, she would find the elusive lunar essence.
And find it she did. Yet, by the time she had filled the little vial, the purpose slipped from her mind. The sorrow that once burdened her had vanished. Enchanted by the sacred iridescence, she buried the vial, continuing her journey through the forest, half human, half animal, her spirit overflowing.
As the years passed, the villagers sought her, but she remained hidden, blending seamlessly with the woods. And though in the stillness of bright nights the faint tinkling of vials could be heard among the trees, the search slowly faded from their memory.
The girl who had once filled the village with joy became a forgotten tale.
Over time, her hair turned gray, her eyes clouded, and from staring at the moon so much, she had become a lunatic. Little did they know, she was not the first nor the last to succumb to that fate. For, fortunately or unfortunately, the old alchemist had made many promises.
The dimensions of the diorama are 20,5 cm wide, 22 cm high, and 12 deep.
